….Unless immediate action is taken, the vast bio-diversity of Sundarban comprising its 425 wildlife species including the Royal Bengal Tiger and 300 species of trees and herbs and the other natural resources which sustain millions of people, may disappear within the next 50 to 90 years…
In response to the above threat, Goa Center for Alternative Photography (Goa-CAP) in collaboration with Proye Design Kolkata, initiated a 15 day art residency project in the Ground zero, ‘the Sundarbans’ titled ‘ALTlab -Social Photography Residency’ This photography residency is open to all the artists who are willing to experiment with alternative & analog photography with a focus on environment, nature and wildlife.
This 15-day residency will ensue in three parts. The first 5 days of the residency will comprise hands-on training and experimentation with alternative and analog photography processes. Artists will have the opportunity to explore, take risks, experiment, and collaborate in the research-and-development lab for the photography art. During the next 5 days the artists shall embark onto a location in the Sundarbans where they will stay and capture the magnificent life and surroundings in the wilderness in addition to interacting with the environmental enthusiasts. The last and remaining 5 days shall entail processing of the images by the artists.
This unique, first of its kind, residency will offer the participants an opportunity for exploration, reflection and experimentation while being in close proximity to the nature and being socially responsible.
To provide artists with the time, space and assistantship to create new work through interdisciplinary approach to both the photography process as well as project production.
To promote a dialogue between artists, wildlife and environmental enthusiasts to investigate intersections of art, Wildlife Ecology and Biodiversity and to engage the general public through artistic expression to emphasize upon them the importance and relevance of preserving our natural heritage
