After the success of the first edition of photography residency ALTlab we are pleased to present the second edition ALTlab 2.0. In order to make this edition more engaging and inspiring we have added a “walking” component to the existing format of the ALTlab. As said by a German philosopher and poet, ‘all truly great thoughts are conceived by walking’, we think that walking will be inspirational and a subject of exploration for artists in residency. We believe that it will allow artists to express by creating dialogues with the world around and provide continuous stimulation to their creative senses.

For ALTlab 2.0, the resident artists would be a part of a three day walk expedition (total 38 Km). It would not be a guided tour or a photo walk but a self-exploring and self-realization endeavour. We would organize experts to assist in case some help is required.

During the walk Artists would be encouraged to record their own experiences and understanding of the surroundings. The images that are created on the spot would be the base for the experiment through Alternative Photography process. Artists will have all the freedom to choose their project for the residency either before, during or after the walk. The project however should be based on the walk and the alternative process.

Prior to the actual walk of three days, artists will be lead through the two week introductory workshop on alternative photography to open up dialogues among participants and mentors regarding basics in alternative photography. The artists would therefore be in a better position to decide upon the kind of camera and equipments to be carried along during the walk.

The artist will have to choose one process from the provided following options:

1.Daguerreotype

This is the first commercially successful photography process. The image is a direct positive made in the camera on a silver plated copper plate.

2. Van dyke brown

This is an early photographic printing process. The process was so named due to the similarity of the print color to that of a brown oil paint named for Flemish painter Van Dyck.

3. Mike Ware New cyanotype

This is a photographic printing process that renders a cyan-blue print. The process was popular in engineering circles well into the 20th century.

4. Gum Bichromates

This is a 19th century photographic printing process based on the light sensitivity of dichromates. It is capable of rendering painterly images from photographic negatives.

5. Salt Prints

The salt print was the dominant paper-based photographic process for producing positive prints during the period 1839 through 1860.

Financial and other support

Travel expenses; Maximum of Rs. 8000 – To and from Goa (against actual bills).

A total stipend of Rs. 20,000 for 2 months will be paid to the residents.

All the material required for experimenting will be provided by Goa-CAP. The Goa-CAP apartment is furnished and rooms will be available on twin-sharing basis.

There is a common space that can be shared for work or socializing. Residents will have to make their own arrangements for food. A common kitchen at the apartment can be used for cooking.

A coordinator will be in charge of logistics who shall attend to the needs of the guests.

Eligibility

Residency applications for Altlab 2.0 are invited from contemporary artists, of any medium, who are eager to use a darkroom and historical process to create images. Applicant must be a citizen of INDIA. There are no age limitations.

Application procedure

Applicants should be seriously engaged with researching and developing their own photography language. They should be open and willing to live modestly with other artists for a period of two months. The selected residents will have to commit themselves to being present in Goa during the time of this residency programme.

• Receipt of acceptance letters from applicants: 05 February 2012

• Commencement of the 2 month residency: 01 March 2012

In Plato’s Cave

This edition of In Plato’s Cave is a project collaboration of Lucida – A photographers’ collective,

We are proud to present to you our new Project

THE SALT PRINTS is a contemporary artists’ march with the aim to retrace the historical “Dandi March – the 387 km walk from Sabarmati to Dandi”, which launched the history’s greatest non-violent battle, the civil disobedience campaign, headed by the father of the nation, the great Mahatma Gandhi in 1930.

This Dandi March in 2011 by a group of 4 artists aims to visualize the historical geography by collecting and capturing photographs throughout the walk to develop a visual narrative of people’s personal and collective memoirs about Gandhi and his philosophy.

The participating artists are, Ajit Bhadoriya, Edson Dias, Chaitanya Guttikar, and P. Madhavan who shall be equipped with the pinhole, medium format and large format cameras loaded with films. The march will start on the 6th of July from Sabarmati and will end at Dandi, Gujarat.

The four artist marchers have a commitment to teach 4 youth in the village where Gandhi rested for the day (List of villages). Four youth volunteers would be selected from the village and taught, by each of these marching artists, on the basic photography skills giving them an opportunity to visually represent their village and culture. This is a small step towards igniting youth’s imagination, creativity and self-expressionthrough photography.

This march being initiated by Goa-CAP aims to culminate with a series of photo-exhibitions, multimedia presentations and a book.

The total envisaged expenditure on the project is Rs.6,72,000/- (Six lakh seventy two thousand Rupees only / 16,000$). The fund required is not for the march but for the post production. We are looking for your valuable support to make this event a success.

Goa-CAP has established, THE SALT PRINTS fund account and those interested can easily and securely make contributions to this fund. Goa-CAP shall provide frequent updates to the donors regarding the utilization of funds.

There are several ways to pledge contributions to the aforesaid fund. The Indian donors may choose to contribute using an option best suited to them. For example we accept cheques, demand drafts, money orders and bank transfers.
